What exactly are we hoping for as a species? What is it that we are aiming for?
If we take a Darwinian view we are all striving to pass on our genetic footprint to the next generation. If we take a progressive humanist approach we are striving to create the perfect society devoid of need. If, as Freud suggests, subconscious drives are the basis for our behaviour, we are all floating on the sea of our irrational drives. Nietzsche sees us as creator/destroyers, quantum physicists as vibrations occurring in multiple dimensions, believers place us as an indispensible part of a cosmic puzzle.
In human history great minds have sought to describe the state of humanity and describe the nature of existence. No one has come close. (Although, Wittgenstein probably came close by describing all of the above as linguistic puzzles.) The problem is that nobody knows, and attitudes change depending on where you are standing. If humanity can’t describe why or what we are, how can we describe what it is that we are doing or where we are headed?
Above all of these problems there is a simple truth - 6 billion people is about 4 billion too many.
